Leaky gut is when the intestinal lining becomes more permeable allowing larger gaps to develop.  When those tight junctions in the intestinal cell walls become inflamed and damaged it allows the large proteins and toxic material to pass thru into the blood stream that would normally be repelled. In a Leaky Gut the bacteria, fungi, parasites and their toxins (yes, that means their waste), undigested protein, fat and again waste pass through the damaged gut wall.


For many, it’s similar to ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, either is this process of dismantling the inner ecosystem of the gut walls where 70% of the Immune system begins its fight.  When this becomes damaged and inflamed the protective coating of antibodies aren’t present to ward off infections.  With chronic inflammation in the body and a suppressed immune system it makes it very hard for you to lose the extra pounds you’re carrying and for an array of symptoms to pile up.  The body turns into a stressed state and keeps hold of the fat cells to use for energy in the ‘fight or flight’ situation it’s preparing for and your metabolic engine slows down leaving you sluggish and symptomatic.


But it is not only losing fat that can be the problem. Leaky Gut Syndrome can also be the underlying causes of many ailments that seem completely unrelated. Arthritis, chronic fatigue, migraines, celiac disease, skin conditions, diabetes and lupus may well be linked to Leaky Gut Syndrome.

You may be thinking to yourself how the last two signs can be linked to a leaky gut? What do our feelings and thinking have anything to do with our gut?


Well, the gut is widely known in the neuroscience world as “the second brain”. In fact, Michael D. Gershon M.D, wrote a book on the subject with the same title, explaining how your gut has a mind of its own.


According to Gershon, our gut is the only organ that has its own intrinsic nervous system without any input from the brain or spinal cord.  This evolved so our Paleolithic ancestors could hunt, run away from danger and make caveman babies without having to worry about digesting and absorbing food.


We take many functions of the body for granted, but it’s vital to our well-being if we understand the digestive process, the impact of the Standard American Diet, the toxic food sources, how key it is to our optimal health and why ‘we are what we eat and digest’.  
Gershon states that there are more than 100 million nerve cells in the small intestine, which is roughly the same as the whole entire spinal cord.


Add the nerve cells in the esophagus, stomach and lower intestine and then we have more nerve cells in our bowels than our spine.


No wonder we get butterflies in our tummy, feel sick to the stomach and have to show some guts to get through enduring times! This is why a leaky gut can have a huge effect on our psychological wellbeing.

It is also very true that if our gut is leaking so is our brain and toxins are getting by the blood brain barrier and this is how the mental state of the nation is suffering from a huge epidemic of depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism, Parkinson’s, MS and Alzheimers.  A good read is the “Grain Brain”, by David Perlmutter, MD.


13 CAUSES OF A LEAKY GUT – you may be at risk.


The following substances have been identified to damage the intestinal lining and cause leaky gut syndrome from many doctors clinical experience.


  1. NSAID (Nonsteroidial anti-inflammatory drugs)
  2. Ingestion of allergic foods or those your body unknowingly has become highly sensitive or intolerant
  3. Ingestion of offending chemicals(preservative’s like sodium benzoate, pesticides especially glycasophate, additive’s, artificial colors or dye’s, known carcinogen’s like carrageenan and any genetically modified food!!
  4. Poor diet. Eating highly acidic foods, saturated fats, inflammatory foods such as dairy, the nightshades (tomatoes, tobacco, eggplant, white potatoes, peppers and paprika), yeast, grains and sugars.
  5. STRESS
  6. Spinal subluxations. Usually vertebrae discs T5 through to T9
  7. Negative emotions and harbored resentment
  8. Chronic constipation
  9. Too many sweets
  10. Fried foods
  11. Smoking
  12. Alcohol or wine
  13. Transmissions of toxics through the mother in the case of a newborn.


What can be done for a leaky gut?


There are different options to assist in healing and repair.   I highly recommend a cold laser therapy protocol that allows your body to release serotonin, endorphins and enkephalins to bring it back to better balance and help reprogram itself against the body’s own assault on otherwise natural substances and begins to function optimally.
